PSA: How to reset your sleep cycle

I am a horrible, horrible sleeper. Not because the quality of the sleep is lacking, but because my body has a horrible clock for these sorts of things. I get it erratically, at different points of the day, for differing amounts. Much like the XKCD strip, I seriously considered just telling people I lived in different time zones.

But science, good 'ol science, seems to have found a way to reset your body clock: stop eating. For about 12-16 hours prior to when you want your body wake up, don't eat. So if I want to set my "morning" to be, say 5 PM, I stop eating at 1-5 AM and try to wake up at 5 PM. When you wake up and your body is nice and hungry, eat a really good, healthy breakfast. Your body receives the food and thinks "WHY THE HELL ISN'T THIS BACON?". I mean, "it's morning".

More details and science-y stuff can be found here:

This is one of those odd things that, while I haven't empirically verified for myself, passes the "smell test". While my sleep clock may be unreliable (read: broken), my stomach is fucking military precision on when it tells me to eat. Even more impressive, it sounds like Sgt. Hartman from Full Metal Jacket when it's trying to tell me it's hungry. I don't dare cross my stomach for fear that it'll make me choke myself.

But possibly, if I can trick it to anchoring around a new "morning" by timing my breakfast, my stomach should continue to do an excellent job in telling me when lunch, dinner and "time for bed" is. I'mma give it go!

PSA: Time is a resource

I sometimes believe the internet can read my mind. Don't believe me? Well, I had been thinking to myself recently that, while an excellent source of entertainment, video games really don't do much else for you. And wouldn't you know it, the same day I find this excellent article over at Pixelated Geek. They put my thoughts into words likely better than I could.

This has nothing to do with the article, but I found it on Pixelated Geek and lol'd.

To sum up: time spent playing video games is time lost doing anything else. This is something that I think some avid gamers forget from time to time.

Oh sure, arguments be made that video games increase your hand/eye coordination, or that organizing a WoW raid is an exercise in project management. But other than other gamers, who else is going to understand this? More importantly everyone has goals in life, and most of them don't involve video games (get an education/job/spouse, raise a family, travel more, lose weight, etc.). Video games advance none of these goals.

I'm not knocking video games in any way - I love them - but I don't recommend anyone play them at the expense of other aspects of their lives.

PSA: TF2 Heavy update is CREDIT TO GAME

In honor of the new Team Fortress 2 heavy pack that's slated to appear today, I decided to whip up a couple of pictures in Garry's Mod. For those that play the game with me, it's no secret that I despise heavies almost as much as I despise pyros. The following is part public service announcement, part an excuse to use Garry's Mod some more, and part cry for help (someone stop me!). Click the below images for higher-resolution.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Should you play the game in the next couple of days, you'll see a large amount of the heavy class roaming around as people try to unlock achievements.

Please, stab them. Stab them all.

Thank you.

Public Service Announcement: Epic Music

You've just read a post on epic music here on The Unwind.

While the benefits to epic music are obvious, there are hidden dangers to epic music that are, well, hidden and often go unnoticed. While you're listening to it, and shortly there after, you may be tempted to do outrageous things that could endanger yourself, others or (worse still) be really embarrassing. Even being exposed to second hand epic music can cause erratic changes in behavior.

Some facts:

  • Reckless driving onset by rocking out to "Freebird" accounts for 70 percent of all "Freebird"-related injuries.
  • The Pirates of the Caribbean fight music has been scientifically proven to increase blood flow to the part of the brain that controls sword fighting.
  • With the exception of professional boxers, listening to "The Eye of the Tiger" anywhere near a boxing ring increases your mortality rate nearly twenty fold.

We at the Unwind hope you do continue to enjoy epic music. But please, listen responsibly.
